Some guidelines for smoother social interactions:  The Dos

  • Look people in the eye when you talk to them.
  • Have good posture.
  • Use a firm handshake.
  • Thank everybody for everything they do for you.
  • Backtrack as soon as you realize you’ve made a mistake and apologize.
  • Be a good role model for your family.
  • Laugh at people’s jokes.
  • Have good hygiene and use deodorant.
  • Dance with anyone who asks you.
  • Enunciate every word.
  • Speak in a low pitch.
  • Introduce yourself.
  • Introduce men to women.
  • Introduce the younger person to the older person.
  • Be a self-sustaining guest.
  • Say hello and good-bye to your host.
  • Graciously accept all compliments.
  • The person who initiates the phone call ends it.
  • Talk equally to the person on either side of you.
  • Take upset children out of the situation until they calm down.
  • Welcome unexpected guests.
  • Even when in doubt, giving is always good.
  • Telephone your host the following day to say thank you.
  • Answer a letter with a letter.
  • Answer an e-mail with an e-mail.
  • Answer a phone call with a phone call.
  • Answer a text with a text.
  • Ask before using FaceTime.
  • Ask before posting photos/announcements on social media.
  • When possible reciprocate with a return invitation.
  • Be aware of other people’s body language.
  • Be aware of your own body language.
  • Be aware of giving people space.
  • Keep your breath and body fresh.
  • Keep your nails, teeth, clothing and shoes clean.
  • Drink a glass of water for every glass of alcohol.
  • Men – hold doors open for women.
  • Let the woman control the handshake, hug, and kiss.
  • Kiss but don’t tell.
